Hendrix, Marley, and Joplin

Too often, it seems, brilliant and impactful artists are taken from us way too soon. In the short time they filled the world with their music, they stole our hearts and left their impression on our spirits.

Even though they no longer walk this earth, their voices still fill our speakers, their lyrics still move our souls, and the photographs taken of them keep their faces alive. These posters are a snapshot, a moment in music where they can live on forever.

 Jimi Hendrix

Though his mainstream career only lasted four years, Jimi Hendrix’s impact on rock music can still be felt today.  Jimi was described by the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as "the greatest instrumentalist in the history of rock music" and was ranked number one on Rolling Stone’s list of the 100 greatest guitarists of all time.  Like too many, his life was tragically ended by overdose, but his music will keep putting a spell on us till the end of time.

Jimi Hendrix Stuttgart Poster

This psychedelic print is one of Jimi’s best-known tour posters for his January 19th ’69 show in Stuttgart, Germany. The artwork was produced by German graphic designer and artist Gunther Keiser who worked for the concert agency Lippmann + Rau to produce posters for stars like The Who, Miles Davis, and Hendrix. Though these posters were originally produced specifically for the German tour, the awesome design was so popular that they were reproduced for sale at Hendrix's US shows. These reproductions were printed with the imaginary tour date of January 15th. Take home a piece of music history with this psychedelic poster!

 Bob Marley

Even 38 years after his death, Bob Marley continues to be cherished by millions around the world.  A pioneer of Reggae, Marley’s unique blend of Caribbean beats and R&B, along with his distinctive voice and moving lyrics, continue to touch listeners to this day.  Growing up as a biracial kid in the slums of Jamaica, Marley was able to translate his adversity into authentic songs and timeless melodies.  A Rastafari guru and legend, Bob Marley stands as a beacon of peace and harmony in a world too often focused on animosity and hate.

Bob Marley Brighton 1980 Poster

Bob Marley jams on stage with The Wailers for the Uprising Tour at the Brighton Center in England on July 8th, 1980. Just a few months before his final performance in Pittsburg, the malignant melanoma was intensifying under his toenail and spreading throughout his body during his summer tour. As his final song, Marley performed what could be considered one of his greatest works: Redemption Song. He ends his career the way he lived, in a musical protest against control and oppression. His voice still reaches through time and urges us to “emancipate ourselves from mental slavery” because none of us can stop time.

 Janis Joplin

When naming top female powerhouse vocalists of all time, our mind goes straight to Janis Joplin. The ‘Queen of Psychedelic Soul’ had five singles reach the Billboard Hot 100 and was ranked third in VH1’s 100 Greatest Women of Rock N Roll. Characterized by her distinctive raspy and soulful voice, her mainstream career may have only lasted a few years before she tragically overdosed, but the way she left everything she had on the stage still inspires performers to this day.

With a style like no one else and a strong and soulful voice, the way Janis was able to connect to audiences was painfully and beautifully authentic. Inspired by the moving lyrics and soul of blues singers, Joplin was able to mix blues, folk, and rock in a rough and unique style which made her a legend who paved the way for countless women in music. She may have flown off too soon, but her sweet songs are everlasting.

We’ll leave you with the words of Jerry Garcia from “Bird Song,” which was written about Janis:

“All I know is something like a bird within her sang,
All I know she sang a little while and then flew off..”
